U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died last Friday at age 87. Best known for her advocacy for women’s rights, she also played an important role standing up for the disabled. Media company, Disability Scoop, posted an interesting article that recaps RBG’s relevant disability rulings.
While I try to keep politics out of this blog, I feel it important to mention the danger many of us will face at the possibility of a decidedly conservative Supreme Court striking down programs and protections that we rely upon such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and equal rights legislation. Progress made over the past 50 years could be eradicated by the court in the course of a year or two. My hope, and I may be naive about this, is that even if the government fails to protect its most vulnerable citizens, companies will continue to provide these services amid widespread public pressure.
Can Anything be Done?
It may not be possible to stop the appointment of a conservative judge or prevent the court from moving strongly right. There’s always the chance that the new appointee or one of sitting judges moderates their views supporting precedent and maintaining balance. As citizens, we must continue to keep pressure on our elected officials and the corporations who employ us and provide our healthcare services. Importantly, we should support the nonprofit organizations that support the various communities of need. These nonprofits are our lifeline while the government and corporations get their act together.
