Here’s my latest article for the Sunrise Medical Live Quickie blog about choosing an accessible vehicle. I’m still deep in the throes of this process but I’ve narrowed down the choices and expect to start talking to dealers shortly. My plan is to acquire one by June.
Tips for Choosing an Accessible Vehicle
I mentioned back in September in my first article for the Sunrise Medical blog. that I think it is a useful and interesting resource for people with mobility-related disabilities. I learn something every time I read one of the articles, and I hope you will look through the rest of the content and share articles of interest with friends or family who have mobility challenges.
Finding the Right Vehicle is Complicated
As for choosing an accessible vehicle, the process would have been simpler if I was looking for a wheelchair accessible van as that would have limited the options. As our main requirements are to find a vehicle that J can easily transfer to, and that has sufficient cargo space for her wheelchair, recumbent bike, etc., and is all-wheel drive, this left the door open to many more vehicles than I expected. Suitable vehicles included minivans and large SUVS, gas, electric, or hybrid, priced from $35K to $100K+. The good news is that there are choices, the bad news is that it can be overwhelming. I hope this article takes some of the pain out of the process, and once I acquire a new vehicle, I’ll post photos. In the meantime, tell me about your experiences buying a vehicle or which ones fit your needs.
